# Several strategies on one symbol

> Run more than one Live trading strategy on the same instrument in the same broker account — how one netted broker position is split between them and you, and the question Live trading asks when you trade by hand.

You can run **several Live trading strategies on the same instrument in the same broker
account** — a breakout and a mean-reversion strategy both trading ES, in the one
account — and keep trading that account by hand alongside them.

<Warning>
  This is an **advanced** setup. Nothing about it is harder to switch on — you
  just turn Live trading on for a second strategy — but it changes what your broker
  screen means, what your statement's P\&L means, and what happens when you place
  a trade yourself. Read this page before you do it.
</Warning>

## Why it needs explaining: your broker nets

Your broker keeps **one position record per account and contract**. It does not
know about strategies, and there is no broker-side field that says "one of these
two ES contracts belongs to the breakout strategy."

Orders, on the other hand, *are* separable: every order Live trading sends carries a tag
identifying the strategy that sent it, so every **fill** is routed back to the
right one. That is how Live trading keeps per-strategy books over a netted broker
position, and it gives one identity that the whole feature is arranged around:

```
what your broker holds  =  Σ (what each strategy holds)  +  your own position
```

Each strategy's share is built from **its own fills** — never from the broker's
netted number, which with two strategies on a contract is nobody's single
position. The last term, the **residual**, is defined as whatever is left over.
It is your own trading, and defining it as the remainder is what lets Live trading
recompute it correctly after any disconnect, without needing to see your manual
fills.

## Reading it on the Positions page

Under each symbol you get:

| Line                  | What it is                                                                           |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Broker net** | The account's actual position in that instrument — the number your broker shows you. |
| One line per strategy | What Live trading attributes to that strategy from its own fills. |
| **Your own position** | The residual: the part no strategy accounts for. |

A **standing** "your own position" is information, not an alarm — Live trading has
acknowledged it as your baseline. It only turns amber when it is *unexplained*:
a question is open about the trade that changed it.

The run view shows the same split for a strategy whenever the account holds more
than that one strategy.

## What changes when you do this

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Your broker's P&L will not match any single strategy's" icon="chart-mixed">
    The broker nets the strategies together and reports the net. If one is long
    and another short, its realised P\&L belongs to neither of them. Per-strategy
    P\&L comes from AskFutures' own record of each strategy's fills — the Positions
    page states this caveat wherever two strategies share an account.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Strategies do not net against each other inside Live trading" icon="arrows-left-right">
    Two strategies that want opposite positions each send their own orders and each
    rest their own brackets. At the broker they may net to zero while both
    strategies are still holding — and being managed — perfectly correctly. Live trading
    does not collapse them into one net order.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="There is no account-level exposure cap" icon="gauge-high">
    The contracts-per-signal limit is **per strategy**. Your account's worst case
    is the **sum** of every Live trading strategy's size on it. Three strategies at 2
    contracts each can put you at 6 contracts of one-way exposure. Check that
    against your margin before you turn the second one on — nothing in AskFutures
    checks it for you.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Each strategy earns live separately" icon="lock">
    The [demo gate](/live-trading/turn-on-live-trading#demo-first) is per strategy. A new
    strategy does its own clean demo day even if a sibling has been trading live
    for weeks. Two strategies on one demo account is, in fact, the right rehearsal
    for this whole feature.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="One Live trading link per strategy version" icon="link">
    Each armed strategy version gets at most one link. Several strategies per
    instrument, yes — several links for one strategy, no. And every strategy still
    needs its own [armed slot](/guides/live-signals) on your plan.

## When you also trade the account by hand

This is the part that matters most, and it applies whether you run one Live trading
strategy or five.

### A standing position is fine

If you already hold ES by hand and then put a strategy on that account, nothing
is asked and nothing is disturbed. The position you were already holding becomes
the **baseline**, and Live trading simply works around it. The same is true when it
restarts into an account holding your positions.

### A *change* is what raises a question

If the account's position moves in a way no strategy's orders explain — you
bought or sold the instrument yourself — and strategies have positions or working
orders at stake, Live trading first waits briefly to see whether one of their own orders
explains it. If none does, it acts, and then it asks.

**What happens immediately, before you answer:**

| Situation | What Live trading does |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Your trade was on the **same side** as a strategy's exits (it may have pre-empted them) | Cancels that strategy's stop and target — they are now potential double-sells — and freezes it. **Whatever remains open is unprotected until you answer**, and the question says so in as many words. |
| Your trade was on the **opposite side** (it cannot have done the exits' job) | Leaves that strategy's stop and target working and still managed — trailing continues, time and rule-based exits still fire. |
| Either way | Cancels working entry orders on that contract, and stops new entries going out. Automatic contract rolls degrade to *tell me and wait* until the question is settled. |

### The question

One question per account and contract — **not one per strategy** — reaches you on
your usual alert channels and as a card at the top of the Positions page and on
each affected run view:

> **Did you sell 1 ES yourself?**
> A trade AskFutures did not send sold 1 ES on your account. Until you say whose
> it was, the strategies below are held — no new entries go out.

It lists each affected strategy, what Live trading attributes to it, and whether its
exits were cancelled. You answer one of three ways:

| Answer                                                                          | What happens                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **That was me closing it** — pick which strategies (you can pick more than one) | The contracts you traded come off the strategies you named, **oldest position first**. A strategy closed in full goes flat and starts following again immediately; a partial close resizes it and its exits. Anything left over becomes your own position — you just said it wasn't another strategy's. Every strategy you didn't name re-places its exits and carries on. |
| **It was my own trade** | The trade is absorbed into your own standing position. Every affected strategy re-places the exits that were cancelled and carries on where it left off. The overlapping exposure is now your explicit choice. |
| **Stop everything** | Every position those strategies still hold is closed at market, every order they have working is cancelled, and Live trading goes off for each of them. Cannot be undone. |

<Note>
  Reading the question is never gated. Answering it is — it is an action that
  restarts trading. And while a question is open, **Match strategy** and **Skip
  this trade** are both refused for the affected strategies: neither could keep
  the promise it makes until the account's books are settled.
</Note>

### If you don't answer

<Warning>
  A question left unanswered for **10 minutes of market-open time** resolves
  itself — counted in open-market time, so one raised just before the close does
  not quietly expire overnight.

  Each affected strategy then **assumes its share of your trade closed its
  position**, oldest first, re-places protective exits for whatever it still
  believes it holds, and **halts** for you to resume. The assumption is written
  down alongside the trades that prompted it, so you can always see what was
  guessed.

  It deliberately does **not** flatten what is left. After an unanswered closing
  trade the attribution is a guess, and selling against a guess — into an account
  you may have already flattened yourself — would put you net short. Halting with
  protection in place is the safe end of that branch, not the tidy one.
</Warning>

A second manual trade while a question is open replaces the question: the
containment is re-applied against the new trade and the clock restarts.

## Practical advice

* **Add the second strategy in demo and let it run a day** beside the first, even
  if you're impatient. That day is where you find out what the two of them
  together actually do to the account.
* **Do your manual trading somewhere else** if you can. A separate account for
  discretionary trades removes this entire category of question.
* **If you do trade the account by hand, answer the question promptly.** Between
  the trade and your answer, the strategies on that side are holding positions
  with their stops cancelled.
* **Size for the sum, not the parts.** Your margin sees Σ of every strategy's
  contracts.
* **Read per-strategy P\&L in AskFutures, not on your statement.**
